Photo Print Sizes
3R, 4R, 5R sizes and pixels
Input
Enter your photo in pixels and every size shows the resolution you would actually get. Leave it empty to just read the sizes.
Print sizes
The sizes photo labs print. Print paper is defined in inches, so the millimetre figures are calculated.
| Size | Millimetres | Inches | 300dpi pixels | With your photo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3R · L | 88.9 × 127.0 mm | 3.5 × 5 in | 1050 × 1500 | |
| 4R · KG | 101.6 × 152.4 mm | 4 × 6 in | 1200 × 1800 | |
| 5R · 2L | 127.0 × 177.8 mm | 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 | |
| 6R | 152.4 × 203.2 mm | 6 × 8 in | 1800 × 2400 | |
| 8R | 203.2 × 254.0 mm | 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 | |
| 11R | 279.4 × 355.6 mm | 11 × 14 in | 3300 × 4200 |
300dpi is the figure widely used for photo quality and 200dpi is the lower limit most labs accept on big prints. Both are convention, not a standard. Where the photo and the paper differ in proportion the photo is cropped, and these figures assume that crop. Nothing you type is sent to or stored on a server.
How to use
The real dimensions of photo print sizes such as 3R, 4R, 5R and 8R — in millimetres and inches — together with the pixels a 300dpi print needs. Enter your photo in pixels and each size also shows the resolution you would actually get. No photo is uploaded, and the numbers you type never leave your browser.
When to use it
- Before sending photos to a lab, to see how large yours stay sharp.
- To look up the millimetre and inch size of a print format.
- To know how many pixels you need before cropping or shrinking a photo.
How to use it
- Enter the photo’s width and height in pixels — your file info panel shows them.
- Each row then shows the dpi you would get and whether that is sharp enough.
- Leave the pixels empty to simply read the sizes.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels does a 4×6 print need?
At 300dpi, 1200 × 1800 pixels. The 4R row of the table says exactly that.
Can I enlarge a photo to print it bigger?
Adding pixels does not add information. An upscaled photo gets bigger, not sharper. A print that large needs a larger original.
What do the R numbers mean?
They are the trade names for print paper. 3R is 3.5 × 5 in, 4R is 4 × 6 in — the number comes from the short side in inches. Other names for the same size are listed in the table.
How is this different from the paper, DPI and pixels tool?
That tool starts from a sheet of paper such as A4 and a dpi you choose. This one starts from a fixed print size and tells you whether your photo has the pixels for it.
