Straight-line distance

Shortest distance on the WGS84 ellipsoid (geodesic).
How to use
Calculates the straight-line distance between two cities. The Earth is treated as the WGS84 ellipsoid rather than a sphere, so the geodesic result is more accurate than a simple great-circle estimate. Everything runs in your browser and no location permission is requested.
When to use it
- Answering "how far is Seoul from Toronto?".
- Estimating a flight distance to gauge how long it takes.
- Getting a rough distance without measuring on a map.
How to use it
- Type the origin city; names in English or Korean both work.
- Pick the city from the list.
- Do the same for the destination and the distance appears at once.
Good to know
- This is the straight-line distance. Real flight paths are longer because of winds, airspace restrictions and stopovers, and road distances differ far more.
- Distances are measured between representative points (usually a city centre), which can differ from airport-to-airport figures by tens of kilometres.
- For two places near opposite sides of the globe, the geodesic calculation becomes unstable. Rather than show a guess, the tool says it cannot be calculated accurately.
- No location permission is asked for; only the two cities you choose are used.
Frequently asked questions
It disagrees with my flight distance.
This is the shortest straight line between two points. Real routes ride or avoid the jet stream, detour around closed airspace and sometimes include a stop, so they run longer. Use it for a sense of scale.
Why do some pairs refuse to calculate?
Points very close to being exact antipodes make the geodesic solution fail to converge. Instead of inventing a plausible number, the tool says so.
My city is not listed.
The list covers well-known cities. For a smaller place, measure from the nearest large city; typing the name in English sometimes finds it too.
Can it measure from where I am?
Not asking for location is a deliberate rule on this site. Choose the nearest city as your origin instead.
